Fillers

Missoula Fillers Treatments for Volume Replacement

Fillers are for volume replacement and are comprised of hyaluronic acid, similar to what we make in our own skin. Gem Aesthetics and Wellness carries the Restylane line of fillers, including Restylane Kysse ® and Restylane Lyft ®, Defyne ®, Refyne ®, Restylane ® and Contour ®. Fillers are injected with small needles or through flexible tip cannulas. The type of filler used depends on the area of the face to be injected, as well as the patient’s own anatomy and aesthetic outcomes.

Lips

Lip filler doesn’t have to be obvious or fake. We strive for a very natural approach replacing lost volume or subtle plumping.

Cheeks

Cheeks are often the first place we need to address as we age. Volume loss to fat pads and underlying bone structure in the cheeks often presents as hollow “tired” appearing undereyes, pre-jowls, and smile folds (nasolabial lines).

Before & After

Frequently Asked Questions

What is filler?

Filler is, much like it sounds, used to fill or replace volume. With age, we loss volume in our faces in the form of shrinking fat pads and bone loss or signs of decreased hydration, such as in the lips. Filler is hyaluronic acid based and looks very much like a clear jelly. Depending on where it is injected, your provider will determine how firm or soft of a filler you need. For example, filler that is used to mimic cheek or jaw definition is much firmer than one that might be used in the lips.

Does filler fix wrinkles?

Filler is different from wrinkle relaxers such as Botox (R), Xeomin (R), or Dysport (R). It does not work directly on the muscle movement that causes wrinkles. However, when it is injected it can plump the skin thereby softening wrinkles. One component of aging skin is loss of collagen and elastin, and hyaluronic acid which is why we start seeing wrinkles in the first place. Filler is made of hyaluronic acid which helps hydrate and plump the skin. It can be effective especially in wrinkles that show up around the mouth.

How should I prepare for my filler appointment?

Please avoid blood thinning medications which can result in bruising, such as fish oil, vitamin E aspirins, ibuprofens and alcohol for 3-5 days prior to treatment. Please check with your provider before stopping any medications. Come to your appointment well hydrated and make sure you have something to eat beforehand.

What should I avoid after filler treatment?

Please avoid vigorous exercise for 24-28 hours after treatment as this can worsen any bruising. Do not rub injection sites and avoid makeup for 12 hours. It is ok to apply clean ice packs after treatment and ibuprofen or Tylenol may be used for mild discomfort.

How often should I have filler treatment?

That depends. We now know that filler can last a long time, years in fact. There are some places where filler lasts longer (such as in the cheeks, jaw, or chin) and some places where it seems to metabolize faster (such as the lips). Your provider will be able to assess whether or not you need more filler, and sometimes, based on your best interests, may say “no” to filler.

Can filler be dissolved?

Yes. We carry only reversible fillers that can be dissolved with a reversal agent called Hylenex.

Are there risks with filler?

Yes. There are risks of bruising, swelling, lumps and bumps (which often resolve) and in very rare cases a risk of something called a vascular occlusion. This is when filler inadvertently gets into a blood vessel. Patients are advised on the signs of this at their appointment and will be checked on the day after their filler appointment. A vascular occlusion is NOT considered an “emergency” so please do NOT go to the ER, but should be addressed in an urgent manner by your provider. Hylenex is a reversal agent that is used to manage a vascular occlusion and is kept in our office at all times.
